Over the weekend the ONB staff and customers got the opportunity to go to Escalante to try out some of the gear that we carry in the shop.  The weather was great.  The group of people that we had made it a blast! ” Thanks Dr. Gomez and friends!” We all had a chance to sleep in the “Space Station” by Mountain Hardwear.  We had the “Big House 4 & 6 from Big Agnes.    Everyone got a chance to use the Katadyn water filters in Calf Creek Falls.  We used the “Jet Boil” stoves to make coffee and cyder with breakfast.

I was lucky enough to try out one of the Big Agnes sleeping bags and pad system.  For me it made the would of difference.  I have to be able to move around inside of my sleeping bag, and having the extra room in their bags gave me just what I needed.

Our first day down we got up and did the lower Calf creek falls.  It is a really nice/easy hike with a great reward in the end.  For those of you that have not had the chance to do any of these hikes yet,  you fallow this little river between straight mountain walls for about 2.5 mile to walk threw a tree line that comes from nowhere.  Just as you enter the tree, you start to hear the falls.  A few yards later, BAMB, there is this beautiful water fall nicely tucked away in the middle of the cliffs.  The staff had a ball playing in the water and sliding on the moss that had built up on the cliffs.  The water is crystal clear and glassier cold.

From there we met up with the other group to do “AMC” or also know as “Spencer Canyon.”  This was a amazing canyon for some one like me that hasn’t done any canyons in years or for a first timer like some of the others in our group.  You walk about 2 miles threw the desert when out of nowhere you stumble across this web of canyons.  Once your into the canyon the real fun starts.  It is only a few miles long, but you get to do a hand full of easy to slightly technical repels.  At the end of the canyon you have the longest repel which is about 65 feet long.  From there the fun doesn’t stop.  You get to free climb your way back out of the canyon.  Their is a mix of slots and vertical climbs to the top and a few area that you have to stem out of.  The first time we did it we so much fun because we got to climb out in the dark.  The next day we got up and did it again., but this time it was light the entire time.  To me climbing out in the dark was much funner because it put an element of unknowing to the game.  Not being able to see everything around you but what your head lamp lights up is a rush.

I have been to Escalante several time, but this was my first time getting to do a canyon and not just a few day hike.  Escalante has so much to offer there is no way you can see it al in one trip.

Y Mountain Hike

This summer the shop has hosted a number of different hikes around “the Valley”. Tonight’s excursion was the tried and true Y mountain trail. Having grown up in Provo my whole life, I have done this hike a handful of times and it never fails to impress me. It is easy to be lulled into thinking that Provo/Orem is a pretty dull place at ground level, but whenever I get up on the hill and look out at the lake and the surrounding mountains I am reminded of what a great place Utah Valley is to live.  The Y trail is usually fairly busy and tonight was no exception, but the folks I hiked with were all smiles and good company. I had my dog, Rocco, with me this time and he was a big hit on the trail, getting lots of pets from the cute co-eds we bumped into along the way.  My only regret is that I forgot my dang camera so I didn’t snap any shots of the raging fall colors I saw. Still, I’m glad I got one more hike in the books before the weather turns. Which reminds me: Sundance is opening Night Skiing this year! Come get your season passes at OutNBack ASAP!

Battle Creek Falls

Earlier this summer I went on an awesome hike with a bunch of friends up to Battle Creek Falls. It is located just to the right of the G on the side of the mountains near Pleasant Grove. It is a pretty easy hike; just 1.6 miles round trip. We headed up around noon so that it would be nice and hot out when we reached the waterfall at the top of the hike. At the top of the waterfall there are permanent anchors in the rock, I believe these were put in by the Parks Service. So after a pleasant hike we decided to rappel down the waterfall. There are two ways you can do this. You can rappel down the side of the wall to the right of the actual waterfall, or you can rappel through the waterfall and get soaked in freezing water. We did it both ways and it was so fun! I would highly recommend trying this. All you need is a harness, a rope, a belay device, a locking beaner, and your nerves!

Fun in Snow Canyon with Vaude’s Jolly Comfort IV

Oh man, last weekend was a blast in beautiful Snow Canyon. Pioneer graffiti rules!  Never mind the TV show – being married, with children, does not mean your life is over.

Ride along

Vaude (almost rhymes with Audi) produces some awesome child carrier packs that make taking the family along a breeze.  There is nothing I like more than sharing the outdoors with my two year old son, and that’s why I love this pack. This is not a commercial, I honestly take this thing everywhere. At two years old, it gives to see that my son is big enough to walk by himself on shorter hikes, but on longer treks, when he gets tired I just hoist him up in the JCIV and off we go.

pack 'em up

Another thing I love about this piece is that we have them for rent in the shop, so you can try it out for the weekend before you buy it! It really is a feature rich little pack with tons of pockets and accessories that make it an awesome option for those looking to enjoy their favorite hobby with their kids.

Silver Lake

As i was hiking up to silver lake last saturday morning i was encaptured by the beauty that surrounded me.  Originally being from Washington State the scenery is alot different.  I enjoyed the different trees that ran along beside us and the feel of the cool air without any rain. Kendra, kendra’s mom, sean and i had alot of fun making our way up to the lake itself.  Sean being the crazy kid he is was jumping off of every stone, tree and bush that he could, how he didnt fall off of any of them was a mystery to me considering i cant even walk in a straight line on a straight road! When we finally made it to the Lake it was “extremely low”, coming from my good friend Kendra, she explained to me that the water usually came up to the tip of the tree line. As i was chowing down on my homemade sandwich Kendra and her mom hiked around the whole lake. Then we took pictures with kendra’s camera making sure Keith knew we really went and werent making it up…HA!! After spending about thirty minutes there we decided to pick our way back down the mountain, which took less than half the time it took us to get up. Feeling extremly happy to sit down in a car we finally drove off with tired legs, worn out exspressions and some random christmas music.
